For many years, the Lincoln Town Car Executive L Model has been synonymous with the chauffeuring industry. Having been hailed for its old-world class and executive comfort, it is by far the most favored full-size luxury sedan in the United States. This chapter in luxury transportation services will come to a close in August of this year, leaving many operators unsure of what the future has in store.
Brief History
This American classic made its debut in 1959 as a part of the Ford Motor Company’s luxury Lincoln brand. Following its permanent place in the Continental lineup of 1969, it became its own model in 1981, serving as the flagship for both Lincoln and Ford. Famous for its frame, easy drive and spacious interior, the Town Car is one of the largest cars ever to be produced in America.
Despite declining sales today, the Lincoln Town Car Executive L Model is still the most demanded luxury car from a US company, particularly in the chauffeured car industry, as many of these businesses have built their fleets around these automobiles. New features, such as bullet protection and outer designs, have added significant amounts to the cost. The public was outraged once before when Ford hinted that it would end production in 2006. Instead they moved assembly to Ontario, and the Lincoln Town Car became part Canadian.

This time, Ford will not reconsider; production of the Executive L Model will end in August, and a replacement vehicle will be manufactured. The new MKT Town Car and Limousine have already made their debut at the Charter and Tour Show in 2011. Receiving mixed reviews, this spacious car has more leg room, but seems to be missing the elegant signature offered by the Executive L. Operators are hounding dealerships, trying to get secure the vehicles before the official end of production. Ford is enjoying the revenue from this mad dash, but will the new MKT keep sales high when the L Model is gone?
The main reason for the stocking up on the Executive L Model is minimized availability after the end of production, but there are others too. The price of executive Town Cars will undoubtedly increase as the supply diminishes. Most limo companies keep their cars for around four or five years, but the recent economic downturn has led to many companies postponing buying new vehicles. It can be expected that companies will want to hold on to their remaining Executive L Model Town Cars even longer.
As an American Classic, the Lincoln Town Car Executive L Model will be missed, but will be remembered as one of the most popular vehicles in history. Only time will tell if the MKT will live up to its predecessor.
